Montemagno Castle

Montemagno, Italy

Montemagno Monferrato Castle is a historic fortress located in Montemagno Monferrato, in the Asti area of Piedmont. The first records of the castle date back to 981. Originally, it consisted of a central keep surrounded by walls and a moat.

Over the centuries, the structure was expanded, and the lords of Montemagno gained prominence, partly due to their alliance with nearby Asti. However, conflicts between Asti and the Marquisate of Monferrato led to significant damage in 1269 and partial destruction in 1290.

The castle was rebuilt in the early 14th century, and in the 15th century, the local lords pledged allegiance to the Dukes of Savoy.

In the 16th century, after Monferrato was annexed to the Duchy of Mantua, the castle passed through many noble families—Della Cerda, Ardizzi, Callori, Griselli, Sanseverino, and Cavalchini—before finally becoming the property of the Counts Calvi di Bergolo, who still own it today.

The castle sits atop a hill, overlooking the village of Montemagno Monferrato. Its layout is irregular. The pointed arch windows, decorated with alternating red brick and tuff frames in typical Asti style, were added during the 14th-century reconstruction. The large rectangular windows, balconies, and the elliptical courtyard date from 18th-century renovations. Access is via a drawbridge over the surrounding moat.
