Plymouth Naval Memorial

Description

The Plymouth Naval Memorial is a war memorial in Plymouth, Devon, dedicated to British and Commonwealth sailors who died in World War I and World War II and have no known grave. It stands as a tribute to those lost at sea.

After World War I, the Royal Navy commissioned memorials at Britain’s three main naval ports: Plymouth, Chatham, and Portsmouth. The Plymouth memorial was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, with sculpture by Henry Poole, and was later expanded after World War II by architect Sir Edward Maufe. The memorial bears the names of over 23,000 sailors from both wars, including personnel from across the Commonwealth.

Located on The Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound, the memorial features a central obelisk surrounded by panels listing the names of the fallen. It is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is now a Grade I listed building, recognizing its national and historical significance.
