Segura de León Castle

Segura de León, Spain

Segura de León Castle was built by the Order of Santiago between the 13th and 16th centuries and became the abode of the Encomienda Mayor de León. In spite of its deteriorated condition, some parts of the walls still remain, as well as traces of a moat in front of the main gate and the towers on the main facade.

Now only opened on weekends. Very unprofessional of the administration not to update opening hours on Google maps. We came in vane.

The castle of Segura de León is undoubtedly one of the best preserved in Spain. Thanks to the QR installed at the points of interest you can learn about the origins and history of the castle. The visit is very pleasant and comfortable along the entire perimeter of the castle. The keep offers spectacular views of the entire Tentudia region. Other rooms equipped as exhibition halls can also be visited. To access the castle, do not forget to knock twice on its main door and shouting "ha del castillo" Rafael will appear to kindly assist you.

Visby Cathedral

Visby Cathedral (also known as St. Mary’s Church) is the only survived medieval church in Visby. It was originally built for German merchants and inaugurated in 1225. Around the year 1350 the church was enlarged and converted into a basilica. The two-storey magazine was also added then above the nave as a warehouse for merchants.

Following the Reformation, the church was transformed into a parish church for the town of Visby. All other churches were abandoned. Shortly after the Reformation, in 1572, Gotland was made into its own Diocese, and the church designated its cathedral.

There is not much left of the original interior. The font is made of local red marble in the 13th century. The pulpit was made in Lübeck in 1684. There are 400 graves under the church floor.
