Fallersleben Castle

Description

Fallersleben Castle in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, was built between 1520 and 1551 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud. Originally a three-winged moated complex, only the west wing with its spiral staircase tower survives. It was completed by Duchess Clara of Saxe-Lauenburg, who lived there for 27 years and boosted the town’s economy.

The castle later served administrative purposes and since 1991 has housed the Hoffmann von Fallersleben Museum, dedicated to the poet of the Deutschlandlied and 19th-century literature. Visitors can see preserved cellars, timber-framed architecture, and an art gallery.
