Cloghan Castle

Description

Founded in 1236 by Richard de Burgo, Loughrea’s history is tied to the influential de Burgo family, with the castle last inhabited in the 15th century by Hugh de Burgo, son of the Earl of Ulster. Cloughan Castle stood in ruins for centuries until 1973, when Michael Burke of the Burke family began restoring the surviving tower walls. Further work in 1996 expanded the castle with the aim of recreating medieval life, but with modern comforts, using local craftsmen and materials. Originally intended as a family home, the castle soon attracted interest from visitors and is now a popular venue for weddings, private parties, and castle stays.
