Athenry Abbey
Description
The Priory Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, or Athenry Priory, is a 13th-century Dominican monastery and National Monument in Athenry, County Galway. Founded in 1241 by Meyler de Bermingham with support from Irish kings and nobles, it became an important religious and scholarly centre. Over the centuries it was expanded, burned, rebuilt, dissolved in 1574, reoccupied, and finally abandoned in the late 1600s. Later it served as a barracks, with the tower collapsing around 1790.
Today, the ruins include a nave, chancel, transept, and medieval tombs, with notable 13th- and 14th-century lancet windows still standing.
