St Mary's Church

Description

St Mary’s Church of Berry Pomeroy is an Anglican parish church in Devon, noted for its exceptionally complete 42-foot-long rood screen, considered one of the finest in the county. Because of its condition, the church is listed on the Heritage at Risk Register.

The present church was rebuilt in the late 15th century by Richard de Pomeroy in the Perpendicular Gothic style. It consists of a combined nave and chancel with north and south aisles, a porch with an upper chamber, and a tower containing eight bells dating from the 17th to early 20th centuries. The building has undergone several restorations, notably in the late 17th century and in 1878–79.

The interior features stained glass by Christopher Whall and his daughter Veronica, as well as important monuments, including a late medieval tomb to Sir Richard Pomeroy and an elaborate multi-level monument to Lord Edward Seymour and his family. The church also contains memorials to both World Wars, reflecting its long-standing local and historical significance.
