Moûtiers Cathedral
Description
Saint Peter’s Cathedral of Moûtiers is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Moûtiers, in the Tarentaise Valley in Savoy, France. Listed as a historic monument in the 19th century, it was originally the seat of the Archdiocese of Tarentaise, founded in the 5th century. The archdiocese was suppressed in 1802, briefly restored in the 19th century, and finally merged into the Diocese of Chambéry in 1966.
The present cathedral was mainly rebuilt in the 11th century after earlier destruction, with later Romanesque and Gothic additions. Damaged during the French Revolution, when its towers were demolished and vaults collapsed, it was restored in the 19th century. Architecturally, it follows a Latin cross plan, with a Romanesque apse, a nave with side aisles, a prominent transept topped by a dome, and surviving medieval elements alongside later restorations.
