Saint Peter’s Church of Extravache
Description
Saint Peter’s Church of Extravache is located in Val-Cenis, above Bramans in the Haute-Maurienne valley, Savoie. Standing near the French–Italian border, it is one of the oldest churches in the Maurienne region and has been listed as a historic monument since 1966.
Tradition claims that a church existed on this site as early as the 1st century, but historical research suggests that the earliest structure was destroyed around the 10th century and rebuilt in the late 10th or 11th century in Romanesque style. The church was originally dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul.
Despite suffering fires in the 14th century and again in 1803, parts of the original building remain, including the 11th-century apse, which preserves traces of a 17th-century fresco depicting Christ in Majesty above the apostles.
