Nunney Castle

Nunney Castle is a striking medieval castle in the village of Nunney, Somerset, built in the late 14th century by Sir John Delamare. Surrounded by a wide moat, the castle features a distinctive central tower-keep with four round towers and thick stone walls.

The castle was remodelled in the late 16th century, when larger windows and a grand staircase were added. During the English Civil War, it was besieged by Parliamentary forces in 1645 and damaged by cannon fire.

Although it later fell into decline, restoration work began in the 20th century. Today, the atmospheric ruins are maintained by English Heritage and are open to visitors. Its dramatic moat, unusual architecture and Civil War history make Nunney Castle one of Somerset’s most memorable historic sites.
