Veltheim Castle
Description
Veltheim Castle, in Veltheim (Ohe), Lower Saxony, is a moated castle built in 1555 by Ernst von Honrodt on the site of a 12th-century water fortress. The rectangular complex, surrounded by a moat (56 × 45 m), features a two-storey north wing, a three-storey southeast tower (built c. 1579) spanning the moat, and stone inscriptions marking its history.
The Veltheim family, first mentioned in 1160, owned the original fortress until its destruction in 1430 by Brunswick citizens. Sold to the Honrodt family in 1494, it was transformed into a Renaissance residence between 1555–1579. After the Honrodt line ended in 1814, the Veltheims repurchased the estate in 1832. It remains in their possession today.
