Wülfinghausen Abbey
Description
Founded in 1236 near Eldagsen in the Hanover region, Wülfinghausen Abbey began as an Augustinian convent and became a Protestant women’s foundation after the Reformation. It is one of the five Calenberg monasteries managed by the Klosterkammer Hannover.
The original medieval buildings were destroyed by fire in 1728; the baroque convent and farm estate were rebuilt by 1740, giving the complex a castle-like appearance. About one kilometer west lies the Barenburg, an ancient hillfort likely dating to pre-Roman times.
Since 2013, Wülfinghausen has been home to an independent Protestant sisterhood within the Hanoverian church, led by Abbess Reinhild von Bibra. Today it offers retreats, courses, and guest stays for those seeking rest and spiritual renewal.
