Orsini Castle
Description
Orsini Castle was built from the 13th century likely by the Guastapane-Pandolfo family and expanded over time. After Soriano passed to the Papal States in 1848, the castle was abandoned by the nobility and turned into a prison—first papal, then Italian from 1871. It remained a penal labor facility until its closure in 1989. Standing on the hill above the town, on the northeast side of Mount Cimino, it dominates the medieval center with its severe, imposing architecture.
Despite alterations from Renaissance expansions and later damage due to its use as a prison, constant maintenance preserved its exterior. Today it remains a striking architectural landmark overlooking Soriano nel Cimino.
