Fischhorn Castle
Description
Fischhorn Castle dates from about 1200, but it was heavily restored in the late 19th century. After a fire in 1920, it was renovated and got it's present shape.
During the National Socialist era, the National Socialists confiscated the castle and the surrounding buildings in May 1943. From then on, the property served the SS as a remount depot, as a riding school, and—at the latest from 9 September 1944—as one of the 169 subcamps of the Dachau concentration camp, with 150 prisoners, mainly from the Soviet Union. Numerous personal letters written by Hitler to his loyal associates were also stored here and later secured. In May 1945, Hermann Göring was captured by American soldiers in Altenmarkt in the Pongau region. From 7 to 9 May 1945, Göring stayed with his wife Emmy and daughter Edda at Fischhorn Castle, after which he was transferred to the Grand Hotel in Kitzbühel.
