Château de Montrottier
Description
Montrottier Castle is a former fortified house dating from the 13th century, located in Lovagny, Haute-Savoie, about 10 km west of Annecy near the Fier gorges. Built on a rocky hill overlooking the river crossing between Chambéry and Geneva, it held an important strategic position with wide views toward Lake Annecy and Mont Blanc.
The castle was constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries and later restored in the 19th century. It passed through several noble families, notably the Menthon-Montrottier family, who owned it until the French Revolution. After changing owners in the 19th century, it was bequeathed in 1916 to the Académie florimontane, which opened it to the public.
The castle features a pentagonal enclosure, a large cylindrical keep, towers, and medieval residential buildings, forming a fine example of Savoyard medieval architecture. It also houses rich collections of weapons, tapestries, furniture, and art objects, earning the designation Musée de France in 2003.
