Abondance Abbey

Founded in the 12th century and occupied by Cistercian monks from the 17th century, the Abbey of Abondance was abolished in 1761. It is a striking example of Gothic mountain architecture and houses remarkable artistic treasures.

The abbey shaped the history of the Abondance Valley, and its conventual buildings reflect its medieval importance. The 15th-century cloister murals evoke medieval Savoy, while the exhibition From History to Art: Sacred Heritage in the Abondance Valley presents exceptional sacred artworks. The visit ends in the former orchard, offering a fine view of the abbey, and continues in the church, known for its 19th-century trompe-l'œil decorations and rich furnishings.
