Château de Sallenôves

Description

Sallenove Castle is a former fortified house dating from the 12th century, extensively remodeled in the 14th–15th centuries. It stands in the hamlet of Bonlieu, in Marlioz (Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), and was the medieval center of the lordship of Sallenove. The castle has been listed as a historic monument since 1931.

Built at 400 meters above sea level on a rocky spur overlooking the confluence of the Petite and Grande Usses valleys, it controlled an important medieval route linking Geneva to the Rhône at Seyssel and generated income from tolls.

Owned for centuries by the Sallenove family, closely linked to the history of Savoy, the castle hosted notable events, including diplomatic meetings and military actions in the 16th and early 17th centuries. After passing through several noble families, it was restored in the 20th century and remains privately owned.

Architecturally, the castle features a large fortified enclosure, towers, residential buildings, a chapel, and remnants of its main keep, forming a strong example of medieval Savoyard fortification.
