Château de Châtillon
Description
Châtillon Castle is a former medieval fortress dating from the 11th century, located in Chindrieux on the northern shore of Lake Bourget in Savoie, France. Remodelled several times—particularly in the 16th, 18th, and 19th centuries—it was the seat of the lordship of Châtillon. Parts of the castle, including the polygonal keep, square tower, and entrance gatehouse, have been listed as historic monuments since 1991.
Overlooking the lake from a rocky outcrop, the castle once controlled an important strategic area and gave its name to the lake itself, formerly known as the Lake of Châtillon. First recorded in 1125, it passed through several noble families, including the Montluel, Seyssel d’Aix, Rambert, and Anglejean families.
The castle was extensively restored in the 18th century and later adapted for various uses, including briefly as a hotel in the late 19th century. Built mainly of tuff and limestone, it features defensive walls, residential buildings, and towers reflecting its long architectural evolution. Châtillon Castle also inspired writers such as Alphonse de Lamartine and has served as a filming location in modern times.
