Avernakø Church
Description
Avernakø Church is located in Avernakø Parish in the Diocese of Funen, on the island of Avernakø about 8 km south of Faaborg. The parish was established in 1536, shortly after the Reformation, by royal decree of King Christian III, making it the first new parish created in Denmark after the Reformation.
The church was consecrated in 1542 and was originally built as a timber-framed structure using brick and fieldstone. Major rebuilding took place between 1631 and about 1670, and in 1876 the church acquired its present appearance with a bell tower. In 1913 the church became the property of the local congregation.
Among its oldest furnishings are two brass candlesticks from the original wooden church, and the altarpiece features a copy of Titian’s The Tribute Money.
