Dalby Church

Description

Dalby Church is the parish church of Dalby in Kerteminde Municipality. It is first mentioned in 1357, when indulgences were granted to those who supported the church, and was dedicated to Saint Peter. From 1678 the patronage was linked to the Eskebjerg estate and later to the barony of Scheelenborg, remaining so until the church became self-owning in 1926. Stubberup Church was probably annexed to Dalby around 1500.

The church is a Romanesque building of rough fieldstones with a nave and narrower chancel. In the Middle Ages the nave was extended westwards, vaults were added, a south porch built, and a west tower erected, all in brick.

The oldest furnishing is a late Gothic chancel crucifix from around 1500. The pulpit dates from about 1580, with a canopy from c. 1635, and the Renaissance altarpiece from 1633 depicts the Last Supper, the Resurrection, and Samson with the gates of Gaza. Several 17th-century gravstones are preserved inside the church, and a former burial chapel connected to the Scheelenborg family was once located in the tower room.
